Description

KEYNES, John Maynard. Monetary Reform. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1924.

First American edition of A Tract on Monetary Reform, first published in London by Macmillan the previous year and issued here under the shortened title. The Tract is Keynes's argument for stable domestic prices over a return to the pre-war gold standard (which he calls a "barbarous relic") and the clearest early statement of ideas he later developed in the General Theory.

Title page with the Harcourt, Brace "HB" device, the author styled "Fellow of King's College, Cambridge," and dated 1924. The copyright page reads "Copyright, 1924, by Harcourt, Brace and Company, Inc." and "Printed in the U.S.A. by the Quinn & Boden Company, Rahway, N.J.," with no notice of a later printing. The half-title verso lists two earlier titles under "By the same author": The Economic Consequences of the Peace (1920, $2.50) and A Revision of the Treaty (1922, $2.00). The Preface begins on page v.

Publisher's blue-grey cloth, front board stamped in orange with the HB device, spine lettered in orange "Monetary Reform / J. M. Keynes / Harcourt Brace" between orange rules. Spine ends rubbed and frayed, with light edge wear. The front hinge shows at the gutter but is holding. Interior clean. No dust jacket. A good-plus to very good-minus copy of the American first.
